The below relates to the minimum local required health and safety measures for the Petersime Field Engineer(s) working on-site. The document gives an overview of the Health & Safety measures to be arranged by the buyer and for the responsibility of the buyer.

In case of non-availability or non-compliance of the minimum local Health & Safety requirements stipulated below, Petersime has the right to stop works on-site until the required Health & Safety measures are taken

Personal protective equipment

The Petersime Field Engineer(s) shall bring with him following goods:

  • Safety goggles and hearing protection.
  • 1 pair of gloves, work shoes with steel toecaps and steel sole (type S3).
  • Set of CE-approved tools.

The client will provide the Petersime FSE with additional safety equipment to meet the safety rules implemented on site (hard hat, harness for working in heights, hi-vis vest, …).

Safety Measures

Buyer has the task and responsibility to arrange minimum the below listed conditions.

1. Good order, storage areas and waste materials

A clean work site results in a safe working environment. We therefore recommend:

  • To keep the hatchery daily clean.
  • To remove packing materials and other debris from the hatchery on daily base.

2. Lighting

In order to avoid tripping over tools, boxes and other parts in the hatchery due to insufficient light that results in injuries we advise:

  • Assure sufficient light in all workplaces of the hatchery, light intensity must be min. 300 Lux but 500 Lux is recommended.
  • Light must be cold or warm white.
  • Strong solid portable lights must be provided for the assembly of incubators and HVAC.

3. Fire

As fire prevention is of utmost importance and evacuation in the unlikely event of a fire we recommend:

  • Provide CO2 or foam fire extinguishers to the workers doing welding or grinding and per local safety regulation.
  • Sign boards on locations with fire extinguishers in place.

4. Fall protection

Falls are the largest cause of accidents in the construction industry. High level precautions need to be taken to prevent or minimize the risk of injury.

  • Proper and strong guard rails and sign boards around pits, roof lining, ceilings, either temporary or final installed.
  • Use of solid (step)ladders and scaffolds either CE or US-approved.
  • Rolling equipment such as, but not limited to, scissor lifts, forklifts, boom lift or cherry picker and scaffolds must be in good working condition, foreseen by all certificates and handled by qualified persons.
  • Scaffolds must have wheels with brakes. Scaffold is foreseen from a stable platform big enough to have the persons needed to carry out the work in a safe manner. The platform must be reached so that the worker or PS engineer can do this in a safe manner. Scaffolds must be equipped with stability poles to prevent tipping.
  • During the installation of ceiling panels extra support might be needed to prevent falling of panels.

5. Electrocution

Electrocution is probably the most common source of fatal injuries as the untrained worker not always sees the danger. Following preventive measures are requested:

  • Residual current devices (RCDs or trip devices) with a rated tripping current not greater than 30mA (no time delay) required to ensure current is promptly cut-off if contact is made with any life part.
  • Sockets, extension leads and other outlets available on the construction site must be protected from impact and water ingress (IP44 as a minimum) and undamaged.
  • The outer covering (sheath) of the extension cable is gripped when it enters the plug. The coloured insulation of the internal wires should not be visible. The same outer covering is not damaged and is free from cuts and abrasions.

6. Quality of helpers

  • Helpers are certified and competent for the job assigned to them.
  • Helpers do have the equipment they need to perform the job in a correct safe manner.

Health Conditions

1. Welfare facilities

  • See Chapter “Food & Lodging” (minimum requirements local accommodation, food, transportation).

2. Site and hatchery access

  • The construction site needs to be accessible in a safe manner from the road without risk to people and transport.
  • The hatchery must always have at least one entrance to enter the building in a safe manner.

3. First Aid

  • A fully equipped first-aid station must be available and a designated first aid officer on site.

On-site risk assessment

A safe work environment for all staff is essential for a successfully accomplished hatchery construction. Therefore, on-site Health & Safety are considered of utmost importance to all Petersime personnel and especially to our Field Service Engineers who will be supervising the installation at buyer’s premises.

Our Field Service Engineer(s) responsible for the installation will perform a risk assessment upon the first days of arrival on-site, at the beginning of the project. The risk assessment will be executed by on-site inspection of the equipment and the findings will be noted in a Risk Assessment Document. The purpose of this action is to define whether several important Health & Safety criteria are met, always in the favour of all personnel related to the construction and to the job itself.

Our Field Service Engineer(s) will not be limited to wearing proper work clothes and safety shoes but also on carrying their Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as it is defined by the general guides and legislation within European Union. However, our staff will have to use equipment and instruct technicians who fall under the buyer’s scope of work and consequently the state of safeness of the later falls under buyer’s responsibility.
